Every year I say the same thing about July in Old Town: it's the month our neighborhood remembers it's older than the country. This year that's especially true, because America turns 250 and Alexandria turns 277, and both birthdays are being celebrated on the same waterfront I walk every morning.
Here's what's happening in Old Town this July that I actually think is worth your time — the events I'll be at, the ones I'll be sending clients to, and the ones I'll be dragging out-of-town friends to see.
The big ones.
Alexandria & USA Birthday Celebration
This is the one. Alexandria's 277th and America's 250th, celebrated together at Oronoco Bay Park with live music, food and drink vendors, and a grand finale fireworks display over the Potomac. Free to attend. Get there early — this is going to be crowded, and rightfully so.
Great American State Fair
A 16-day national exposition on the National Mall with pavilions from all 56 states and territories, live entertainment, food, and America 250 exhibits. It's a short Metro ride from Old Town — take the Blue Line to Smithsonian and walk out into the whole thing.
George Washington: A Revolutionary Life
The new fully-interactive exhibition at Mount Vernon is a can't-miss during the semiquincentennial. Just eight miles south of Old Town — take the Mount Vernon Trail by bike if the weather cooperates. Add the Revolutionary War Encampment on Patriots Path while you're there.

The weekly rituals.
Old Town Farmers' Market
The longest continuously-operating farmers' market in the country, going since 1753. Market Square, in the heart of Old Town. Local produce, fresh flowers, baked goods, and the best people-watching in town. Bring cash and a tote bag.
Waterfront strolls & sunsets
The Old Town waterfront in July is honestly its best self — cool river breeze after the sun starts to drop, boats coming in, and every waterfront restaurant patio full. Start at Waterfront Park at the foot of King Street and wander north to Founders Park, or south toward the marina.
Where to eat this month.
The waterfront restaurants really earn their reputation in July. If you can grab a patio table, do it. My picks for this month specifically:
Jula's on the Potomac — the polished dinner-with-a-view option. Book early on birthday-celebration weekend (July 11). Vola's Dockside Grill — best patio in Old Town, best lobster roll to eat on it. BARCA Pier & Wine Bar — Spanish tapas and sangria on a pier that extends over the water. This is the "we're pretending we're on vacation" spot. Ada's on the River — for celebrating something. And of course, Josephine — my personal favorite in Old Town, and their upstairs Bar Jo is the perfect after-fireworks nightcap.
The day-of tips.
For July 11's Alexandria/USA birthday fireworks: Oronoco Bay Park fills up fast. Arrive by 7 p.m. if you want a good spot on the grass. Bring a blanket, snacks, and water. Parking is essentially impossible after 6 — Metro to Braddock Road and walk down, or park up in Del Ray and stroll over.
For anything on the waterfront: Old Town gets warm and crowded in July. Wear breathable shoes (you'll be on brick sidewalks all night), bring a light layer for the breeze off the river, and reserve dinner well in advance.
For the National Mall events: The Blue Line runs Old Town straight into DC. Skip the drive. Metro closes late on major event nights, so check schedules ahead of time.
What I'll actually be doing.
Saturday morning at the farmers' market. Long walks along the Potomac before the day heats up. Dinner reservations at Josephine for something special. And on July 11 — down at Oronoco Bay Park with a blanket, watching the fireworks over the water in the neighborhood I love.
