This is my neighborhood. I live in Del Ray, and July is honestly the best month to visit it — exactly what people picture when they hear "small-town Main Street with everything you need." Kids on scooters. Neighbors on porches. Live music floating out of Pat Miller Square on a Thursday evening. It's the version of a summer month that actually delivers on the vibe.
Here's what's happening in the neighborhood this July, and where you'll find me.
The headliner.
First Thursday: America 250
The final First Thursday of the 2026 season, themed "America 250" in honor of the country's 250th birthday. Pat Miller Square transforms into a block party with music, activities, food, and the whole neighborhood spilling out onto Mount Vernon Avenue. Free, family-friendly, and the most Del-Ray-in-July thing you can do. Sponsored by The Jen Walker Team.
Heads up: the Del Ray Citizens Association scaled First Thursday down to a 3-month season this year (May, June, July), so July 2 is the last one until 2027. Don't miss it.
The weekly ritual.
Del Ray Farmers' Market
The Saturday morning centerpiece of Del Ray life. Over 20 local farmers and vendors at Pat Miller Square — Shlagel Farm produce, Smithfield grass-finished beef, Ana's Twist pretzels, St. Elmo's coffee, Brutto sourdough, Jinlan dumplings. Bring a tote and cash and plan to run into three people you know.

The Fourth of July weekend.
Del Ray itself doesn't have its own big fireworks show, but the neighborhood is a perfect launch pad for the region's celebrations. A few options:
Mount Vernon Fireworks
George Washington's estate hosts evening fireworks on both July 3 and July 4. The ticketed shows are typically sold out, but you can catch them from nearby vantage points along the Potomac. Bike the Mount Vernon Trail from Del Ray — it's about 15 miles down.
Salute to America on the Mall
The big one — America 250's capstone fireworks display on the National Mall, billed as the largest fireworks show in history. Metro from Braddock Road Station straight into DC. Book ahead, expect crowds.
Alexandria & USA Birthday Celebration
Old Town's version — a full evening at Oronoco Bay Park with music, food, and fireworks over the Potomac celebrating both Alexandria's 277th and America's 250th. Walk down from Del Ray or grab a Lyft. This is the most local of the fireworks options and worth attending.

Some Del Ray institutions to hit this month:
St. Elmo's Coffee Pub for weekend mornings — the neighborhood's living room since 1996. The Dairy Godmother for Wisconsin-style frozen custard on a hot afternoon (the flavor rotates daily and it's always worth checking). Evening Star Café's Front Porch is one of the best patios in the DMV for summer dinner. Taqueria el Poblano for margaritas that everyone talks about. Cheesetique if you want cheese-and-wine as a whole vibe. Bagel Uprising for Sunday morning fuel.
What I'll actually be doing.
Look — this is my neighborhood. I live in Del Ray. My mornings are on Mount Vernon Avenue, my Saturdays start at the farmers market at Pat Miller Square, and I'll absolutely be at First Thursday on July 2 with everyone else.
